Fuck.
I suppose I got lucky, because if it had happened at almost any other time, it would've been a disaster.
Just as I was heading to bed for the night, I heard a pop, and this rush of sound that just kept going. This happened literally 5-10 seconds after I had turned my furnace up a couple degrees (programmable thermostat had dropped to overnight preset, but I was cold), and at first I thought it was just the furnace turning on. It took me all of the next 5-10 seconds though, to figure out that a water pipe had just burst in my basement, so I put some boots on & ran down the stairs to shut off the main valve. Not much water (no more than maybe couplefew buckets worth) on the floor & all over my work bench. I haven't gone through things to see if anything is ruined, but I think when things dry out, most of it will be fine. I mopped up as much as I could & turned on the dehumidifier so it should be ok by morning, so long as the remaining water draining out of the pipes doesn't overflow the bucket that's currently under the leak.
It's my own fault, really - there's been one pipe with a slow drip (due to corrosion) that's been leaking for months. I was hoping that it would seal itself (I've had a pipe do that before at the old house), and I figured I'd wait to see how it went. Obviously, that was a poor decision. I just keep thinking... what if that had happened while I was at work? There's a floor drain, but it would have probably put out the water heater pilot light, and then I would have also had a gas leak on top of hundreds of gallons of water on the floor!
Anyway, I sprayed down the closest joints with WD40 (will spray again in the morning), and 1st thing tomorrow I'm going to, at minimum, try to remove the bad section & block it off so I can get water back to the house. Best case is that I can finally move the washing machine/basin like I've been wanting to do for ages. If this goes well enough, I may go ahead and try to connect my water softener in the next couple weeks too, but first things first I guess.
I need to go to bed, but I'm just not sleepy at the mo. Tired, yes; sleepy, no. And I don't know if I'll be able to sleep anyway, as I can still hear water leaking from the split pipe into the bucket.
