Practice went pretty well last night, aside from the fact that I've lost any firmness in my fingertips, due entirely to a lack of practice on bass. By the middle of the second set, my first two fingers were almost burning from the constant, single-string movement of one of our songs. It got so bad, I had to stop using my index finger, which I didn't think I'd be able to manage - usually, if I get my fingering wrong, I lose track of my notes, but I did fairly well, I must say! We had a "guest" last night too; the guy who's trying to get us this gig, an old high school friend of the guys. He stayed for the practice, too. We worked on a few new songs, and I think that, within the next couple weeks, we'll have three of them down enough that we can add them to the setlist. The "guest" is also a karaoke dj, and so he set up his rig so we could see the lyrics to one of our new songs - that was pretty cool! Was a song I knew from a long time ago, as I used to own it - "Lack of Communication", by Ratt. Once I got the bass down, the drummer told me he could really use some help on the "chanted" part, so this is now the first song in which I play bass and "sing" at the same time. It was really fun, and for having just learned the song last night, I did fairly well, I think. Unfortunately, I discovered a possible issue with my bass. I'm having intonation problems as I get higher on the neck. I'm pretty sure it's because when I converted it to a 5 string, I left the original 4 pc. saddles on it and tried to adjust it out with them. It worked for a while, but the string heights vary quite a bit (making it a bit more difficult to play) and now that I'm having issues, it's not easy to adjust. I need to take some time in the next week or so to make new saddles so each string has its own, then adjust it. Everything I play up high is sharp right now, and while it's not horrible, it's kind of annoying.
Oh yeah, tonight is my friends' show downtown (the "lead singer" & my bud from the 2-pc band... man, I really need to come up with some "code" names for these people, as they keep showing up in here & it's a PIA to keep saying "my buddy [this]", or "my other buddy [that]". ugh...) - part of me really doesn't want to go (again... typical, yes? ugh.) but I'm supposed to meet my boss down there. Oh, and the girl from the sandwich shop, that I invited out a while back & didn't show? I invited her too, so I probably should be there, even though it's unlikely she'll show up.
