Was one of my buddy's b-day last night, and since another's was this Friday, he came to hang out as well. I stopped off at another pub beforehand, because 1) another friend of mine was playing a low-key "covers" gig, and 2) I needed a drink to mellow out a bit, because I get uncomfortable walking into a group setting like a bar b-day party "cold". I ran into a couple of other guys I hadn't expected to be there & shot the shit for a little. Headed back to the other bar & had a couple with the b-day crew (saw several band people I hadn't expected - I guess band people all hang together!?) including the cute lead singer I mentioned a couple days ago. Didn't get to talk to her much, but did get to talk with a few of the others for a bit. One of the b-day boys is playing in a band that's opening up for the Misfits in Detroit in the next week or two (I forget the date).
As an aside, it seems like a lot of people I know are getting gigs with well-known acts - my friend "the joker" & her surf-rock band just played with/is playing with Men Without Hats (again, forget the date); my buds in Gods of Kansas played with Firehouse and the Kiss Army, among others; and this is my punk rock friends' second (maybe third?) time playing with the Misfits, I believe. Speaking of playing out, it looks like my band may have a new gig soon. Apparently pays pretty well, but it's going to be on the 29th this month. In talking with the other band guys, I'm finding out that they've all got gigs that night, either locally or out of town. Last time, we had to compete with "Zombie Prom" among other big events; this time, we're competing with several other Halloween night events, so it's doubtful that anyone's going to show up for this gig either. *sigh* Also, we're going to be responsible for playing the whole night. Since we only have two full sets down (ok, *I* only have two sets down) it looks like we're going to have to play a bunch of songs twice. If the night is somewhat dea, I might try to talk the guys into winging a couple things - the Guitarist is really good at improv, and if he can float a straight-forward chord structure at me, I can throw down some basic bass riffs while he improvs over the top. We've done it before in practice & gone on for 10-15 minutes. Of course, he's a perfectionist, so he probably won't want to take a chance on doing something wrong/goofy, but at least I can ask. I'm going to have to get some decent practice time in at home the next few weeks, I think.
The furnace guy is supposed to pick up my "fancy-pants" thermostat today & might even have everything done today, although I think it's going to be tomorrow, personally. The thermostat I ended up wanting was pretty pricey, but it does everything but make coffee in the morning (and it was specifically made for the furnace-a/c units I purchased) so I won't have to worry about upgrading for years. I'm getting nervous now though... Once I pay him off, then pay off the credit card with which I bought the units, my bank account is going to be quite a bit lighter. I like having a "safety net", and I'm concerned that if I spend most of that (for example, on new kitchen appliances and/or furniture) I'm not going to have anything to fall back on.
Leaving work now, gotta run!
