I'm trying something new tonight. I've written before about how the studies suggest waiting 2 hrs after a strength training session (before doing a cold dip) is better for muscle growth, but it dawned on me this weekend that I tend towards chronic inflammation already, so maybe a cold dip right after would help?
I had a 1.5 hr workout tonight, and only waited 30 minutes afterwards to get in. The water was 55.4°F, so I stayed in 10 minutes, and it felt very comfortable. I then decided, as it was actually warm out tonight (68°F/20°C), that rather than taking a hot shower to warm up, I'd do it naturally. After the tub, I took a cold shower (to rinse off the chlorine/etc), then got dressed & went for a walk. I've stopped recording distances, but I walked for 32 minutes. The first 10-15 were a bit relaxed, as my feet were close to cramping, but they warmed up eventually, as did my arms, and I felt reasonably ok.
I'm sitting having dinner in my sweats right now (hoping I'll warm up a bit more before bed), but I'm curious to see how well I sleep tonight. I had an insight recently that every time I do a cold dip before bed, my heart rate stays elevated for several hours afterwards as tracked by my Ring App (this also happens when I have too much sugar late, i.e. ice cream! sugar = inflammation). Anyway, I'll check things out in the morning and see how it goes. I'm out of melatonin too, but decided not to buy more yet, as I was relying on it (it did work though). If I continue to have trouble sleeping, I'll buy more, but hopefully, I can manage things via other means like diet, exercise, cold therapy, etc. The last two nights, I've also waited until it started getting dark before going to bed, which means I'm getting less sleep, but sleeping better. Only losing 45-60 minutes or so by waiting, but falling asleep faster, so it somewhat evens out!
Btw, Anna, I'll keep looking for Freeze the Fear online. I found it on BBC America, but they won't allow that show to be played outside of the UK, so I'll have to wait for it to show up somewhere. Thanks for turning me on to it!
