Well, it wasn't the best day, but I did get a lot of little things done.
1) Bought replacement filters for my kitchen faucet filter unit. I've needed one for more than a month, so I'm glad to have that corrected.
2) Stopped by my insurance company to get copies of my insurance papers, then headed to the DMV to renew the registrations for my truck, my old cycle, and get a new driver's license. The new ID is pretty cool - as I understand it, I only need that for both domestic flights in the US, and for crossing the border between both Mexico and Canada without my passport. I was hesitant to do it at first, but carrying one ID is so much easier than taking my passport & hoping I don't lose it.
3) Bought new gloves for lifting in the garage, as I wore a hole in the finger of the old ones. Working out in the cold isn't too bad, but without gloves? Forget it. Anyway, they were only $10, but I really like them!
4) Picked up several new mouse/rat traps for the house/garage, and some poison bait for the bait traps in the basement. I've also been needing to do that for months, so I'm glad to have them here. Tomorrow, I need to go through and place everything so I'm not overrun with rodentia. I'll feel better once that's done.
5) Got the oil changed in the truck, as it was a bit overdue (are you sensing a theme here!?) Need to have the tires rotated as well, but this shop wanted to charge for it, and I can get it free at the place I bought my tires, so I'll do that tomorrow.
6) I felt good after my workout tonight, so I decided to go for a run again. It was slow, but went well, and I was really warmed up by the end. Warm enough, in fact, that when I got home, I got out of my running gear, put on a pair of shorts, and walked about 20-30 paces out into the snow in my back yard, then back in. My feet were just starting to hurt a bit when I got back in, but they were fine after being in the house again for maybe 30 seconds, so I did it again! Went not quite as far this time, as the cold was getting to be a bit painful, but it was fun! This made me decide to spontaneously try something ...
7) Went back in, put shoes on (still in only shorts), then went back out into the middle of the back yard (it was dark already), and did a standing meditation for maybe 10 minutes. I checked the temp when I got back in & it wasn't too bad (35°F/1.66°C) and only a light wind. It's funny, but honestly, it felt a lot like the cold showers I've been taking. My water is only down to 50°F/10°C, but air doesn't conduct heat nearly as well as water, so it felt about the same. After about 10 minutes, I did this 'horse stance' exercise you're supposed to do with the Method, to rewarm your body, then came inside. I was concerned I might have overdone it & might stay cold/get colder due to after-drop, but I was warm again within maybe 15-20 minutes. It really is amazing what your body can accomplish if you push it a little!
Anyway, #7 was fun, and I think I might start doing that a bit more regularly. For some reason, it seems more fun than the cold showers. Maybe it's a bit of the show-off in me, the same way, at least in part, that I get a kick out of riding the cycle in the snow/cold? Regardless, walking barefoot in the snow was an interesting experience!
I have a theory I want to test out, to see if it will make handling the cold easier. Tonight, my feet (and moreso, my whole body) was warm, so there was a drastic change in temps, stepping into the snow. Next time, I'm going to pre-soak my feet in a tub of cold water (shower temps) to see if making them cold beforehand lessens the effect and makes it easier. I've also seen videos of people actually lying down in snow with nothing but shorts on, and I think I might like to try that eventually too.
It's funny, this cold exposure has really improved my perception of the cold. A coupe days ago, it was 20°F/-6.67°C outside, but it really didn't feel that cold to me, which is a new, but welcome, thing.
