WJC was supposed to stop over tonight to get the engine running in the Dodge, so I was finishing up the last few items on my list, the last of which was to fill the transmission with fluid. I put in two quarts & checked for leaks - didn't find any, so I continued to fill it. 8 quarts later & I start to hear something running onto the ground. I get back under the car & find that the location for the speedometer cable is just pouring out fluid, and as I didn't get a speedo cable with this engine (and the one from the old trans is incompatible) I had no way of sealing it up.
This of course means that , having no bins/buckets lying around, much of that is going to end up in the ground. I'm pissed about this for two reasons; obviously the 1st is that the ground is now contaminated, the 2nd is that I had to call off my buddy's trip, because without trans fluid, I shouldn't run the engine. (Oh and I guess I'm a bit mad that I'll have to spend another $50-60 for more fluid once I get it sealed up, and possibly $100-200 more if I have to buy a cable.)
I've posted a question about it to my online forum, so I just have to wait & see what they say. If the only way to seal it is with the cable, it's probably going to be another couple weeks before I can get back at it & by then, I may have to cover the car for the winter. I hope not, I really want to get it running while I can still argue that the warranty is still valid.
