On the recommendation of my realtor, I called a guy about getting my house painted. I'd already gotten a quote from another company, but I wanted to get a comparison (a 3rd company I called & arranged a quote with never showed up; obviously I'm not going to hire them!). The 1st company's quote was to power-wash and paint the siding on my house & garage, but not to do any repairs, and the cost was $5000; not great, but didn't seem unreasonable. The new guy stopped out for the estimate (I'd sent him a text describing the areas in need of repair) and his quote came back with power-washing, repairing several areas on both the house & garage, and painting, at a cost of $1750. Normally I would've been a bit hesitant about such a difference, but if my realtor recommended him, I know he's had experience with the guy, so I went ahead with him.
I'm trying to decide now if I should change the house color. If I were planning on staying for several years, I would, but I'm thinking about resale at this point. The house is white with black "shutters" (just strips of wood, but set up like shutters would be). I want to change it to a light/medium-ish grey, with white trim, but 1) I don't know if it will change the cost very much more, and 2) I don't know if it will hurt chances with resale. Guess I'll call the realtor & see if he has any thoughts...
The catalyst for this was that I'd found a very interesting house for sale online, and as it so happened, my realtor was the listing agent. I texted him to see it, and he said he'd check into when we could. He texted back shortly thereafter to tell me that it had already sold. The damn thing had only been on the market 10 days! Essentially, what I need to do it get my place to 'selling' condition, so that if/when another opportunity comes up, I can move on it right away. There are a couple of places available now that I like, but they're about $30-40k more than I really want to pay (even though they're reasonably priced for what they offer). If I weren't such a cheap-ass, there are a lot of houses I could afford that are really nice - I just don't want to go back to having a house payment now, after all these years.
My workouts are finally getting back on track. I've decided to take things easy getting back into it this time, so I've started doing almost all of my lifts paused; for example, on bench press, rather than lowering the bar & then pressing it right away, I pause with the bar on my chest for a half-second or so. This forces not only proper form, but it eliminates 'bouncing' the weight for momentum, which makes the lift more difficult, but also more effective. The only one I can't pause is squats, because the bottom squat position is a really vulnerable spot, so I'm just focusing on correct form & doing them smoothly/slowly. It seems to be working too; combined with more recovery time (i.e. not lifting so often) I'm finding that I'm able to do more on certain exercises than I could before, and more comfortably. It's going to take me a lot longer to get back to where I was, but I think it'll be better/more sustainable this way. At least I hope so - I'm tired of ramping things up only to overdo it & crash.
