Wish me luck - I'm meeting with a guy tonight about a possible bass player gig in a new band he's starting. The current band he's in is really good. At the first public show I ever played, his band filled in for a spot on the bill we hadn't been able to fill. Really energetic, polished, professional group, kind of a prog/heavy rock band. I'm supposed to stop by tonight to talk with him, get a sense of what they're going for, maybe play a couple songs, and if we seem to get along well (and they're happy enough with my playing) he'll get me mp3's of their music so I can get to practicing.
Apparently, it's a touchy situation with the current band - one of the guitarist's is being a P.I.A. and the other members are all ready to quit. For some reason, they're not willing/able to kick the guy out of the band, due to the drama that would ensue, so they tell me the goal is to start this band as a "side project", and if/when it gets up to speed, they're all just going to quit that band & continue on with the "side project" under a new name. This could be a good opportunity for me, for a few reasons; 1) at least one of the guys works a full-time job similar to my schedule, which means they won't be scheduling stupid practice times, 2) he told me that they're not looking for a bass virtuoso, just someone who can hang/keep time/not hit wrong notes, etc. (I'd mentioned not being a jam/improv kind of guy, and he told me they'd prefer that, as they want to play to the recordings, in order to have a consistent/tight sound). 3) they're a gigging band, which means I might be able to earn some extra bread, 4) from what I remember, I dig their music. It might not be my favorite, but it's in the rock genre, and it sounds like they want to keep it simple enough that I could work to improve my stage presence, which is something I really need to do.
My only concern is that I kind of suck at balancing my life. I'll really have to focus on keeping up with the workouts if I start playing with them. I'm going to have to get *a lot* better at time management. I can't just keep slacking off when I have free time like I have been. On the plus side, it won't matter that I'm single at that point, because I wouldn't have time for a girl anyway! lol
Oh yeah, and the guy was a no-call/no-show on the car last night. I tried to call, but he doesn't even have his voicemail setup for me to leave a message. Although when I was leaving the bank today, the security guard commented on the car & I ended up giving him my contact info, as he said he'd be interested in checking it out. I think I'm going to take a flyer down to the Dog in the next couple days to try and sell my truck, too. I just need one of them gone in order to buy a new vehicle.
Oh, one more thing - I think I'm meeting a gal I work with tonight to check out a new-to-me local bar. She told me about it a while back, and I finally rode by it last week. It looks a little "college high-brow", and believe it or not, I was uncomfortable enough to not want to go in on my own! I asked if she'd let me know next time she went, as I wanted some company my first time in there. My co-worker seems to think the girl likes me (thinks it's obvious, actually, and that I'm blind) but I don't get that impression. I just seem to be easy for her to talk with, and I met her ex b/f just around the time they broke up, so we talk about/make fun of him now (he works at the Dog, which is why I haven't run into her down there - she used to go quite a bit). Anyway, it really doesn't matter if she's into me or not, she has a kid & I'm just not interested in that. Still, she's cool, and seems like a lot of fun to hang with. It'll be good to have a new friend.
