Had my third show ever last night - we got there a bit early, but loading in all the equipment didn't really take as long as we expected. Of course, my setup took all of 5-10 minutes, but the guys took quite a bit longer. The other band showed up shortly thereafter, and got set up in fairly short order. Show started a little after 10p, and the other band started things. They were great! I love watching them, as I've seen them several times and each of them are really talented. Unfortunately, the bass player wasn't feeling well at all, and they only played a 30 minute set. We took our time setting up, and took the stage about 10 minutes early. I was surprisingly much more relaxed than I anticipated (only had one drink beforehand) and our first set went really well - only a couple of small mix-ups that most people wouldn't even notice. Had a conversation with the promoter between sets, and he told us that, based on how slow business had been that day, and the fact that it was quite dead, he wondered if we would mind just running a half-set for our second, and that he was going to let the door guy go, then close up early. I understood where he was coming from, so I let the guys know. We chose to play the last half of our second set, and it went really well, best "set" I've ever played with them live.
Unfortunately, I think I'm not mentally cut out for this business. This show has been planned for a month; I had at least 6-8 people from work tell me they were coming out, and at least as many band-people. *One* person from work showed up with his g/f. The band people I've been going to see consistently for *years*, the ones I'll go to three different venues in one night just to support each of them? Not fucking *one* of them showed up. this is the third show I've done, and the second one in town, close enough for anyone to make, and they can't be bothered to come out & support me... and this show was at the same venue where I go to see them all the time!
I try my best to let things like this roll off my back, I try to be a really easy-going dude, but to be honest, I'm hurt by their... disregard? disrespect? I don't know how to explain it, but at least now (after our next show), I don't have to bother going out to see them anymore unless I really feel like it. I mentioned this to the agent from Lou's, and he kept telling me not to let it get to me, that for as long as he's been in the business this is the way it's been. He also said that things like this show you who your friends really are. He's right about that. I mean, there were a few people who had shows the same night, who otherwise might have been there, and may be able to make the show on Thursday, but the rest of them? Meh. Even "the girl" from last Wednesday cancelled on me. I understand why she did (she sent a text explaining) but still, it was a big disappointment.
In fact, everything about the night was a disappointment, except for the actual playing - that part was a lot of fun! Wish anything else about the night would have come close to being as good...
