So, many goings-on, about which I'm resistant to get into, although not because they're inherently bad or anything. It just feels like it will take a lot of writing to get through, and I'm not feeling like I have the energy for it. I'll try, piece by piece this morning, to try to get through it all though...
I finally took my motorcycle in to get the brakes fixed on it. They should be calling me today (hopefully) with an estimate. I'm almost afraid of what they're going to say - I need pads, front and rear, and a new rotor, and possibly a new caliper in the front. From what I recall of having priced some of these out a year or so ago, the brakes will run around $2-300, the new rotor at maybe $250? and the caliper at maybe $150-200 not including labor, so I'm expecting no less than $600. That's not bad considering how long I've had the bike, and how little it's cost me overall for service/repairs, but it's bad timing, because...
I had to have my truck towed to the service station for brake service yesterday, because while I was driving home from dinner Saturday night, one of the brake lines blew out, and I lost all front braking power. I had to downshift in an automatic in order to make it the 5 or so miles back home. I did have brakes, but barely. I checked it out the next morning to see if I could fix it myself, and based on the location, and the crappy condition of the remaining brake likes, I decided it would be better to have someone do it that actually can do it correctly and quickly. Unfortunately I was also going to take it in to find a fairly serious oil leak that's been ongoing for a while. It leaks up to 2 quarts per oil change - that's nearly half its oil every 3000 miles! I haven't even bothered changing the filter in a year because of all the fresh oil I'm putting back in it! Anyway, it might also need brake pads/shoes, so I'm expecting this to cost me a minimum of $800, as just having brake pads/shoes installed can run upwards of $400 on its own.
Ugh... just got a preliminary estimate - $1200 for all of the brake work, but that doesn't include any of the oil leak issues. I'm going to stop by the shop tonight to look over the areas that are leaking & try to make a decision as to which I'm going to consider & which I can let go for a while (I don't mind small oil leaks). I've been sitting here debating the cost of repairing this truck vs. selling it & buying something newer. I know the history of this truck, I know what's been replaced on it already, etc. I can either spend $2000 or less to get it up to par, or sell it, but if I do, I'll only have maybe $3000 with which to buy something new, and that likely will need new tires, and could have all of the same machanical issues, and many more miles (this truck only this week turned 100k miles. Most vehicles this old have twice that).
The more I think about it, the more I think I will have them get the brakes back together, at least functionally, enough to get home, fix the oil leaks, and then do the brake work myself. It's going to be the best compromise I can make, especially considering I need to pay for the cycle within the next week as well, which sounds like it'll be around $650.
Damn. Too much vehicle talk - I'll get to updating the personal stuff later...
