I talked to the guy about the singing gig yesterday, and I made sure to draw attention to the fact that I was no expert, nor greatly experienced, but that I felt confident I could sing well, and if my guitar playing wasn't up to speed, (bascially telling him that I haven't really played that much) that I could learn fairly well/quickly. He seemed pretty easygoing about it, said that he was open to hearing anyone, and wouldn't be averse to working with me - If, for example, my guitar skills weren't adequate, he would be open to having me sing & maybe giving me a tambourine, or something along those lines. Most of the songs he mentioned are songs I already know, most of them by heart. I asked him what kind of style they were aiming for, as relates to the cover songs they're doing, as most everything I know aims to replicate the original songs/artists. He was glad to hear that, and also that I was a karaoke singer, as it meant that I could keep time with the original recordings.
Everything sounds really good about it so far! I have a couple concerns, one of which I've already brought up to him, and the other I thought of this morning on the drive in to work... The first concern was that I have a tendency to mimick the original vocals, regarding tonality/timbre, and my concern is that my voice is a bit unique/different than a lot of people's and might not be a good fit for their musical style. (Also that I'm not really sure what is my own, true voice, as I am constantly doing "impressions" of signers) My second concern is that most of their songs are in a higher vocal range, and while I can sing them, I don't know that I could do so for an extended period, like a full, three-hour gig. I might need to start seriously pursuing vocal lessons, as I was intending to do a while back. I suppose it will depend on what they can/are willing to do, as far as vocal amplification - if they have a good system for that, I'll likely be fine, as when I sing softly/quietly, I can do so for hours. It's when I try to extend my full voice to the higher ranges that I end up straining and getting vocally tired/worn out.
Anyway, I have an informal audition/meeting with him & (I think) the bass player this Thursday evening. That's usually my bass practice night, but for the next few weeks, that is going to be tapered off a bit, while they work on a songlist for a battle-of-the-bands they have coming up. I told the guy about my involvement in that band as well, and it didn't seem to bother him. I'm really looking forward to meeting these guys! I was really comfortable with him on the phone, so I don't think nerves will be much of an issue. I hope it goes well! Of course, if it does, I hope I can find enough time to do all of these new things I'm scheduling! I'm going to be busy as hell for a while!
