So I had a 'milestone' birthday on Sunday, and I guess I'm a bit surprised that I felt rather nonplussed about it. I got a card in the mail from my ma (to whom I'm still not speaking), and I got a text from my BIL (and a message from Swordfern today).
I used to have this strange dichotomy going on regarding my b-day; on one hand, I've never wanted to celebrate it because 1) I really dislike being the center of attention (and my family seemed to always go out of their way to embarrass me), and 2) I don't feel anywhere near as old as my chronological age would indicate, so I'd prefer to not acknowledge it. I used to believe that if a person didn't know how old they were, they wouldn't age - I know that's a bit silly, but I do honestly believe that not knowing (or acknowledging) one's age makes one age a lot more slowly. I feel the same as I did years ago; it's almost like time has stopped for me, even if the calendar hasn't.
On a different topic, I've finally made an appointment for a new chiropractor, scheduled for Feb 8th. 1st appt will be a little pricey (as I'll need to have x-rays taken), but successive treatments will be about the same price as my previous chiro. Also, on the plus side, there's a sports medicine massage place in the same building that has very reasonable rates, so I'm hoping to incorporate that maybe once a month. Been looking for a place like this for years, so I'm happy to have found this one.
Next topic! Now that I've installed my heated towel rack, I've started taking cold showers again. I've had to start over from the beginning, so for now I'm doing 30 seconds to 1 minute fully cold, at the end of my shower. Current water temp here is around 45°F (7°C), so it's a bit brisk! But I've done it two days in a row now. I want to aim for 5 days a week. There's a whole progression on the Wim Hof site that I might try, but for now, I want to work up to 2 minutes, 5 days/wk.
Change of topic again! In talking with one of our interns this morning, we got on the topic of Software Engineering, and how a lot of them have the ability to work remotely. She said that often, a degree isn't needed if you can prove you can do the work necessary (which she said is usually tested briefly during interviews). Based on this, and considering I've finished the free intro to music theory class I signed up for, I'm now signed up to learn to write code in the Python language.
I'm already proficient at VBA, and I know the logic will transfer over so all I need to do is learn the syntax. Once I have Python down, I need to improve my Java and HTML/CSS, and then I can tackle SQL. If I can get a handle on those, then I might have a great second career once I hit my FI numbers and become work-optional. It'd be great to be able to earn money from anywhere in the world for a few more years, as it would mean my 'nest egg' would have more time to grow, enabling me to have even more options down the road.
