Today was a good 1st day for getting back into strongman training. I worked on overhead log press, deadlift, and 1-arm dumbbell press.
I've played around with the new strongman log I bought a while back, but today was the 1st day I really used it with intent. started with some jump-rope to warm up, as it was only 25°F (-3.9°C) in the garage this morning. Once I got through that, I did a few warmup sets with the log, starting with it empty (72lbs/32.65kg) then going up by 10-20lbs or so each set. So, 2 sets of 72x6 reps, then 4 reps @ 92, 3 @ 112, 2 @ 122, 2 @ 132, 1 @ 142. I was fairly impressed with this, as I haven't done this in years, but I was pretty close to my old records on this. My old strict-press record for reps was 135x 5 reps, and 145 for a single. My old record for push-press (using leg drive to get it started) was 165 for a single. So, I'm only 3 reps off of my strict press for reps, and only 20lbs off my single-rep max press!
Deadlift was next, and I knew I was doing fairly well, but wasn't sure where I would max out. Without getting as detailed as the previous paragraph, I worked up to singles, and topped out @ 315lbs for a single, which is only 50 lbs off my old record. Not sure I could have done much more, but I was pretty happy with that! I think my the end of December, I should be able to bump that up a bit. I plan on evaluating my max lifts for bench, overhead press, deadlift and squat sometime around the 1st of the year. I'm very interested to see how I compare by then.
Last was single-arm dumbbell overhead press. Again, not to get into too much detail, but I worked up to singles, and while I failed at 75 lbs on my left arm (succeeded @ 65lbs), I did manage to get 75 lbs with my right, so those are the marks to improve upon. My best-ever on this exercise is 80lbs left arm, 90 lbs right, so again, not too far off.
Next week, I think I'll swap out squats for deadlift, but keep the log press. Not sure what I'll do for my 3rd exercise; will have to think about that this week.
Anyway, a 315 lb deadlift was a pleasant surprise, and left me feeling pretty strong. In the past, heavy lifts would burn me out, but not today, so I'm happy!
