I'm starting another 2 month workout & supplement program tomorrow, and I spent most of today watching strongman competitions, which lead me to the video posted below. I know I'll never be able to lift even close to the lowest weight show on this vid, but damn, is it motivating!
The last routine I did was aimed at strength-building, but I don't have a lot of muscle mass. I mean, it worked, and I did put on some muscle, but I hit a wall on the strength side of things because I was aiming more to lose body fat than gain strength/size. Lifting heavier weights is a great way to prevent muscle loss while 'dieting down'.
I feel like I'm reasonably un-fat now (ok, ok, I'm still fat, just not as much), so I've written my program to address both muscle- and strength-building. Within the 1st week or two, I'm also going to add some of my old strongman training back in on Saturdays, which means lifting 5 days/week. I do plan on eating a bit more this time, and I'm hoping that allows me to progress a bit more. Monday and Thursday will be higher reps (5 sets/10 reps) whereas Tuesday and Friday will be heavier w/lower reps. Saturday will be things like log-press, raised deadlift, heavy squat picks (just standing up with really heavy weights, then hold for several seconds), farmer's walks, and heavy overhead dumbell presses, all mixed up.
I'm hoping this will get me back to the level I was at several years ago when I trained with the guys out at the 'compound'. I mean, two months won't do it, but if I can see some good progress, it'll keep me motivated to continue.
