Looked at another Volt at a local dealer tonight & took it for a test-drive. This was a 2012, and to be honest, it was by far the nicest, most enjoyable car I've ever driven. I took it out on both the highway & back roads. I'm hooked - seriously considering buying it & holding off another month or two on the cycle. This car costs a bit more than I was planning to spend, but it's almost the same price I paid for the 4Runner, so it's in the right ballpark. It's burgundy, has black heated leather seats & a backup camera with front/rear parking sensors (which are optional add-ons that most LT versions don't have), and it only has 80k miles.
It's also a one-owner car that this dealer sold as new, and they've done all the service on it, including repairing any/all recalls. They also installed new brakes, and new tires when they got it in. The sales guy printed off a big list of installed options, and the service record/history, so I'm going to share it with WJC tomorrow & get his opinion/impressions on it. The dealer said I can probably get $5000 for my truck on trade-in too, so if I don't feel like selling I could go that route, but honestly, I'm sure I could get $7k or more if I sold it myself, so I'll likely do that.
Assuming I can sell the truck for a decent price, I have enough cash to do both of these purchases without putting myself much further behind than if I just bought the cycle, maybe only a month or two behind schedule. That feels like a reasonable time frame.
