(Posted this on facespace, but feel that I need it here as well.)
I'm a very private person, and rarely will you see a post from me, but I simply can't be silent about this. I debated a long time about whether or not to post this, but I felt I had to...
I've spent a majority of my adult years knowing, acknowledging that there was hatred, bigotry, and close-mindedness in the world, but having a sincere belief that we were moving in the right direction (and doing my best to help); that we were becoming more inclusive, more connected, more loving/caring for others in the world, and I truly believed that within my lifetime, there would be a paradigm shift, and we'd start behaving like one big family, rather than living out the ego-centrism that's rampant now. I held onto that hope year in, year out, seeing the step-by-step progress we made as a sign that it would all come true, that peace, love, and harmony (or at the very least, genuine tolerance) would eventually reign.
When I saw the headlines this morning (and after I fully realized that no, I wasn't dreaming, nor was I looking at an Onion article), that hope I'd been nurturing for so long died. I realized that we'd been fooling ourselves; that the hatred, the anger, the 1950's-ish racism and misogyny, and the privilege had never really faded, it just went underground. The second that psychopathic megalomaniac got a podium & started spreading his divisiveness, it all came bubbling back up like gas from a sewage pit.
It crushes me to know that *this* is my country. It makes me ill to think that a majority of the people in my country think this sorry excuse for a human is the American Ideal, that he's the one who should represent us, to be the face of the US to the world. It disgusts me to see that a guy who said (among so many other things) that not only would he take out terrorists, but he'd kill their families as well, is now in the White House.
If you're reading this, and you supported this guy, I'd like you to take a serious look at yourself, think about what you've actually condoned and what lessons you're teaching our children, and if you still think he represents the ideals to which all of America should aspire, then maybe you should just go ahead and remove me from your friend's list right now.
