We had a nice, sunny day, and the sunlight helped to clear the streets; most all the main roads were clear today, and since we didn't get any more snow, they stayed clear tonight. The reason I mention this is because I decided to get the bike out for a bit, especially considering it was bike night! ;-) It was damn cold though, and I really had to layer up. I had so much stuff on, I felt like that kid in the x-mas story wearing the snowsuit, who couldn't put his arms down!
Stopped down to the Dog, but only ran into staff that I know, and the place was dead, so I just stayed for one diet & left. I did get complimented by the manager for having the bike out, though! Went to the brewery next because a friend's band was playing. I ran into Meg_D and her guy, and saw some people I knew, but I missed the band, and other than Meg, everyone I wanted to talk with was engrossed in their own conversations and I didn't want to intrude. I left after about 5-10 minutes & rode the few blocks over to Lou's - place was dead, so I pulled over, got the rest of my gear on & headed home. The speed limit is only 30-35 on my route home, which is a good thing in this weather (wind chill sux!), but this time, I couldn't make it all the way back. I had to stop half way home in a grocery store parking lot to stick my hands on the cylinder heads to warm them up. Fingers were pretty close to numb. Usually I can handle it, but not tonight, which is why I knew it was really cold. I knew when I headed out tonight I would be breaking a long-standing record of mine, but I didn't realize just how cold it would get.
Previously (many years ago) the coldest I'd been out on my cycle had been 12°F (about -10°C). Tonight when I got home, I logged on to check the official weather site, and it was freakin' 1°F (-17°C). Still don't have a windshield, still don't wear a full-face helmet (always ices up), no fairings, etc. I'm sort of proud of it, and yet, I kinda feel like an idiot. I mean, what kind of a moron rides a motorcycle when there's feet-high snow piles lining the streets and it's that fucking cold!? Apparently, *this* kind of moron! (points @ self).
P.S. I just did a quick calculation, and 1°F, with a wind chill speed of 35 (speed I was going on the bike), makes it feel like it was -24.5°F (-31.4°C). It's no fucking wonder my fingers were cold!
