Got the call today, and they offered me a job. Variable part-time, entirely dependent on their workload. We haven't cleared up the drive-time/mileage issue yet, but it doesn't matter at this point. I'm scheduled to work at my old employer's office tomorrow morning at 9am. I didn't get the same pay as I made before, but it's only 7.5% less, which isn't too bad. No benefits, or vacation stuff, etc., but at least I'm going to be making some extra money for now. I get my severance for another month, and then I'll hopefully be getting some unemployment. Hopefully by then, I can find some full-time work.
We tried to discuss compensation for my drive time, on the days I have to go up there, but we couldn't settle on anything. I dropped a suggestion (federal mileage standard) but he said they couldn't afford that. He countered with me submitting gas receipts and reimbursing me. I told him that wasn't really enough (not in those words); we then batted a couple other ideas around, but couldn't settle on anything, so we decided to revisit it once I actually have to travel up there. At this point, it looks like I'll be working for the old company for a while, so the issue might not come up for a bit, maybe even weeks, we'll have to see.
The guy I talked with today sounded really excited to have me working for them. Told me he was very impressed with my knowledge, and my memory. When I went up for the interview, I saw that they had a couple of my old company's projects there - I proceeded to tell him, without looking at anything, a bunch of the setup information for that particular part, how things were done, setup, etc. I then told them about the issues I had with the other project, how we dealt with them, etc. I showed them where all of the old data was stored, and how to cross-reference them, and a bunch of other stuff, right off the top of my head. Considering the fact that I haven't had anything to do with all of that for 4-5 months, he was very impressed I had such recollection. He reiterated to me that ultimately, they'd like to have me working full time up there for them, and even started talking about other ways in which they could utilize my other skill sets & knowledge. I get the feeling that, if I wanted, I could end up being "guy #3" in that company within a year or two. My plan right now is to impress the hell out of them, show them what I can do, and if/when the time comes for permanent full-time work, ask for a raise and/or negotiate some killer benefits.
I have about 1.5 months to make as much money as I can & put it away. I've got to start focusing on getting rid of my stuff, selling what I can, donating what I can't, and getting ready to move, one way or another. At least, though, I feel a bit better about myself now, and I think that having a job (of sorts) is going to really help my confidence level when I get to other interviews. Even if I find a great job out east, I still want to work with these guys, though. I think they're going places, and I want to be involved in some way.
Ok, gotta run - time for a workout, then up to the pub to talk to a friend I haven't seen in a while.
Bis dann!
