Had another back issue on Friday night. Didn't sleep well, but things were a bit better on Saturday, so I thought I was past it. Still hurt some, but I thought I was recovering. Sunday evening around 7p, it started up again, but much worse. Nothing I did made any difference - I couldn't stretch it out, couldn't find any sitting position that helped, and lying on either side, front, or back didn't help either. 1000mg of acetaminophen did nothing, and I literally got zero sleep.
Still tried to go to work Monday morning, figuring I could just sit & persist through it, but ended up leaving for my chiro at about 9a. I could barely move, and my breath was coming in short, rapid bursts whenever I had to move. Now, I've had multiple piercings, pretty severe injuries, and other back pain issues throughout my life, meaning I'm pretty good about handling pain. Several years ago, I had a double ear infection so bad I took to swearing just to get through it, until both eardrums ruptured & relieved the pressure several times.
I only mention these because this was the 1st time I've been in this kind of intense, constant pain for such an extended period. It was so bad I actually started crying in the chiro's office, though that may have been partially borne of frustration? Chiro palpated my back & said there was so much inflammation & guarding that he was uncomfortable about actually do anything, for fear the process would make the inflammation worse, and that I should go home & try to ice it on & off for the next few hours. If I could get the swelling down, I could come back & he could try then.
I did just that, but no matter how I sat/lay, placing the ice pack behind/beneath me just made it worse, and by 3:30p, I was no better off. I'd bought some ibuprofen and acetaminophen on the way home as well, and had been alternating between those since 11a, to absolutely no effect. I ended up having to go the the urgent care center. I was given a strong nsaid shot (don't remember what it was), and the doctor said I should start to feel some pain relief within the hour. She also called in a muscle relaxer prescription for me. Well, this 'really strong' nsaid shot hardly helped (like, it made the pain bearable, but just barely), but even after taking the muscle relaxer, I was still in pain until maybe 9pm, when it finally started to lessen a bit. I called off work again today to take it easy, as it's still a bit uncomfortable, but at least today I can breathe, stand, sit, and lie fairly normally, so I think I'm past it, as long as I don't do anything to aggravate it again.
Sunday night through Monday was some of the worst, most unrelenting pain I've ever dealt with, and I can honestly say, if that ever became a chronic condition, I couldn't live with it. It was enough to make me think that maybe I should finally find a primary care doctor & get back to having checkups & seeing if there's anything else wrong with me, even though I still can't stand most doctors. Whether I will or not, is another story. At least I'm back to a normal level of pain now, and can actually think straight enough to write about it.
