Been watching the Støltman brothers on U-tube recently. They're professional strongmen from Scotland, and between the two brothers, they hold the titles of Scotland's, Britain's, Europe's, and World's Strongest man (or held them all last time I checked). They also seem to be really nice guys, and the younger brother has autism, so it's great to see his success! (Check out an example of their vids below!)
Anyway, having been watching them almost constantly for the last week or so, I've started to realize just how much I missed strength training. I've not been doing great at running (because I'm lazy & slack off too many days between runs), but I'm actually doing fairly well overall, I think. I've also been learning a lot about my recovery from the running sessions (especially since receiving my new 0ura ring), so I decided to try to start reintroducing the weight training, with today being my 1st day back of a 3-week 'break-in period'. Really light weights, really low reps, just easy overall, and everything felt good today but squats, which caused some cramping in my hamstrings. I'll ramp up the reps to 8-10, and once I can handle that, I'll add weight.
I know I always make plans & never seem to stick with them (at least I'm still trying, I guess?) but for now, the new plan is this; run 1 day, weights the next, walk the next. then once again, meaning the 7th day will be completely off (unless I feel like walking/hiking more?). All walks will be based on whether my overnight resting heart rate and HRV (heart rate variability) indicate I'm recovered enough. Those numbers (which may not mean anything to you) are RHR of <60, and HRV of >30. I seem to be 'fully recovered' when my overnight RHR is between 55-57bpm, and my HRV is around 35, so I think those are good estimates. If I haven't hit those numbers, I'll drop the walking day, or maybe just make it shorter. I don't have a plan for the weights/reps to use, will just see how I feel each day, but as I know I tend to overdo it, I'm going to try to not push myself much at all, just small, incremental improvements.
Hopefully this time, I can stick with it for longer than a couple months...
