I found a surprise in my email today - it was a private message from a training/fitness discussion board I used to post on, just checking in, asking me how things were going. I decided to log back in to check things out, and although there weren't many people still posting, the ones that were, were old regular posters.
I replied to the message, and then posted a hello to the board. The guys all seemed pleased to see me back; said they were trying to 'revive' the board by reaching out to old members & said I should start posting a training log again. I told them I hadn't lifted in months but had been meaning to get back to it, and many of them said the same. One guy had stopped for an entire year! (family issues, I think). Anyway, they were encouraging, and I realized this could be taken as a sign; I'd been wanting to start back but was unmotivated; I'd been wanting to find a new, non-drinking crowd too, so even though I wasn't quite ready, I decided to give it a shot.
Started out with a 1.5 mile walk just to get the blood pumping a bit, then tried an abbreviated lifting workout. After my 2nd 5 rep set of light squats, I felt my hamstrings cramp up, so I had to cut them short (I always expect that to happen when I've been off for a while). I then did a shortened shoulder exercise, and one for my grip strength. Overall, the weight portion only took 30 minutes, but I know I'll have difficulty walking tomorrow. I also made a new training log thread and posted tonight's (rather pitiful) workout, so now I'm at least somewhat committed to continuing it. Hopefully, that accountability will help, as long as it doesn't turn into guilt if I miss one or two days. And who knows, maybe I can make a friend or two there?
Also had another surprise email this morning, this time at work. Due to the pandemic & the business situation we were in, I'd assumed that we wouldn't be getting our annual bonus this year, just like we didn't get a raise, but the email said not only were we getting it, but it was much higher than I expected (it's a percentage of one month's salary), and will be paid out this week. I'll be very glad to have this come through, since I still haven't received my federal tax return yet (even though I filed it at the end of March).
