I have to go to the dentist this morning , because part of one of my crowns has broken off & exposed the root, and it's sensitive as hell. Will be getting a temp repair of some sort, then will need to have a discussion about what happened, why, to tell him I want him to check out the one directly above as well. That's the one I had the root canal on (was sent to a specialist), and the crown was so high when the appointment was over, I had to ask them to go back and grind it down more before I left. It was better, but still an issue. I'm pretty sure I even went to my dentist to have it lowered more a week or so later.
Anyway, I bring it up because a few months ago, I had some pieces come out from between that recent root canal and the one behind it. I went in to have the dentist check it out & he said it was fine, that it was likely just excess adhesive, but now I think the same thing happened there too. there's a small gap there now, and food gets stuck frequently, so I want him to check that one as well, because I think the same thing happened. What happened (I think - need to confirm), is that the bottom 'skirt' portion broke away, and the only way that could happen is by pressure from the inside / underneath. The only way I can see that happening is 1) the crown was fit improperly by the mold they took (unlikely), or 2) too much bite pressure, causing it to push out on the lower 'skirt', and crack it. I think the latter happened to the upper as well.
I really don't like this dentist, I don't trust him. I was 'inherited' by him when my original dentist retired. I didn't like the new guy from the beginning, and I honestly think he's doing things in a way to make the business more profitable for him. For example, when grinding a tooth to fit a crown, if you go too far & get to close to the root, you'll then need a root canal. What's to stop him from just doing that anyway? Both of the root canals I've had have been as a direct result of his dental work on me, not any kind of damage or cavities, etc., this first of which resulted in the worst abcess 'he'd ever seen'.
Meh, I could continue to rant for quite a while, but I'll stop here. I've decided that I need a new dentist, I just have no idea how to find one. It's kind of shitty to come to the conclusion that he can't be trusted, because I've been going to the same practice (orig. dentist, then him) since I was 5 years old, maybe younger.
Oh, and I saw from Flood's recent entries that he's not up for company, so I have to decide on somewhere new to go. Maybe I'll just look for an interesting diner or brew pub & plan for a lunch somewhere?
