I finally contacted the landlords next door. I don't want to get into the details, but essentially, it sounds like she's unlikely to share any of the cost for the removal of the remaining standing tree. I'd hoped that the fact that I'd acted in good faith to prevent any economic loss on their part, and to protect the physical safety (and possibly lives) of their tenants would have been a positive influence. She said she'd call me back after consulting her insurance agent and real estate lawyer, but I'm sure that means no.
It seems that if I'd not had the arborist sling the remaining tree together, and they'd fallen during the weekend, I'd have incurred zero cost beyond my deductible, and they neighbors would have had to pay for removing the tree on their property, and also their deductible for home repair, and any expenses due to people not being able to live there, or for any injury, etc.
I feel I did what's right, and I stand by it, but I'm kind of angry that these landlords (and the rest of the world, as it often seems) are so selfish and self-centered. On the plus side, I know now that I only have to trim the parts of any remaining trees that are within my property lines. Any branches overhanging their property are entirely their responsibility, including if they fall due to lack of maintenance. That will save me a bit of money when I have them pruned/thinned/whatever they need.
Still, $4000 sucks. And that doesn't include trimming the remaining ones. Maybe I can make some of that up in the home repairs I need to have done? Ugh, so discouraged now...
(I had some things to write about from this past week/end, but I just don't fucking care to at this point.)
