Well, I definitely have an upper respiratory infection, no denying it. Fortunately, no fever or anything. With as healthy as I've been over the last year, even when others at work were coming down with various illnesses, I've been trying to figure out why I got sick. I mean, I know I may have overdone it the other night, over-taxing my body likely weakened my immune system, but it wasn't all that much more than I had been doing all year, so, why now?
In thinking about it, I realized two things; 1) since I started vacation, my diet has been crap. I haven't been cooking my weekly meals (at all), and have allowed myself more 'treat' items (snacks, pizza, etc) than normal. Instead of omelettes & breakfast meats in the mornings, it's been cold cereals (much easier), lunches/dinners have been frozen pasta meals, for the most part. Not terribly unhealthy, but quite a change from routine.
Also, I realized that I haven't been keeping up too well on the breathing method/cold showers, but wondered how bad I'd gotten, so I looked back on my calendar to see. Turns out, since I've been on vacation (Nov. 22nd) I've only done the breathing, and cold showers 3 times! That's less than once a week, when I had been doing it 3-4 times a week. My guess is that's the biggest reason why I got sick now. The good part is realizing this, and trying to make sure I keep up with it going forward. I did the breathing twice yesterday (once around noon for 5 rounds, once around 7:30p for 10 rounds), and I felt pretty good last night, at least for a bit.
Here's another thing I think I might have figured out. The breathing helps raise your blood ph, making your system more alkaline (among other things), which reduces inflammation and helps to fight off illness. I felt really good last night until I ate 'dinner', which was, again, cold cereal. Within 30 minutes or so, I started feeling poorly again, and it made me wonder if maybe I needed to be eating alkalizing foods to help keep my system in the right zone. I know that fruits like blueberries/raspberries help alkalize my system (through previous experiments), and I know that grains are acidifying, I so I think today I'll research what types of foods will keep me on the high side of the ph balance, then head out to get them & try eating mostly those until this is gone & see if it helps.
Lastly, I did break down & take an expectorant this morning. I could feel it starting to gather in my chest & I need to prevent that so this doesn't linger. Will be doing another set of breathing soon, so we'll see how it goes? I'm really disappointed to have missed my last couple workouts, and it doesn't look like I'll be up to lifting tomorrow either, unless today goes really well.
At least now, I have a reason to stay home, instead of going out looking for what I might be missing.
