I browse cra1gsl1st weekly, just to keep an eye on what's available, hoping to find a deal on anything for which I might be looking. Today, I found something.
The ad was placed in the wrong category, so I had a feeling I'd be able to get it, as the people who would typically be looking for it would never check that category. The ad was for some olympic weights, and a weight tree. Yes, I have plenty - more than two full sets, as a matter of fact, totaling over 650 lbs (295Kg), 740lb if you include the bars. (This, of course, doesn't include the old-style 1" 'standard' plates, of which I have over 400lbs) but I couldn't pass this deal up - four 45lb plates, four 35lb plates, and a weight tree on which to store them.
Now, just for comparison, new olympic weight plates typically go for $1/lb; used plates go for $0.50/lb. At $0.50/lb, the plates I bought should have cost $160, and a tree would cost around $50. So, for for maybe $200 worth of equipment, I spent $100. If I take out, say, $40 for the tree,I paid $60 for 320lbs of weights, which comes to $0.19/lb!!
What the hell am I going to do with that much weight? Well, since I have what I need in the garage on my main rack, I'm going to use the old 'standard' set, and the new plates, to make up some 'strongman-style' implements. I'm bored with my current routine, and honestly, have only gotten in maybe 8 weight-based workouts in the last couplefew months. It's pretty sad, and I can both see it and feel it in my body. For this really great deal on weights that I possibly don't need, I'm actually buying a bit of motivation, thinking of how I can best use them, and what implements I can create. I want to use the old Dodge axle as a base-weight for an outdoor squat/deadlift/viking press implement, and then weld up something I can bolt to it in order to add weights. I also now have enough 35lb plates to dedicate to my 'duck walk' implement, so I don't have to constantly disassemble it. I have 55 gallon drums I can fill with water, and an old wheelbarrow tub that I want to turn into a sled for 'dragging'. There are a lot of things I can do that are outside of the normal 'bench/squat/dead' triad that bores me so.
I really hope this purchase will be motivating enough to get me back into weight training. At very least, it has me thinking about it again.
Oh, and also today, I dropped off my old knives & WW2 patches of my gpa's that I've had for years, to the guy who fixed my dad's watch. He told me originally that he was interested in that old stuff, and today he said he'd have an offer to me in the next week or so. From the sounds of it, it might be anywhere from $50 to $100, so they might even pay for today's purchase!
