I'm not well educated regarding history, so what I've written should be taken with that understanding. I very well may be falling prey to the very propaganda machine that I worry about - that being said, if someone can educate me about what's below, to show me why I may be way off-base, I'd love to hear it. I don't want to feel the way I do currently, and I'd love to be able to say I've misinterpreted things, and it's not all that bad.
That's not how it feels though...
I've been trying to be hopeful, stay positive about things in the world recently, but today, it really hit me. Blatant lies to media supporting his agenda, removal of information/web pages from government sites, imposing a blackout on certain govt agencies' public communications, signing things that limit/take away people's rights (of any kind, but specifically rights to health & reproductive care right now), moving forward with xenophobic border "protection", stacking the supreme court & his staff with as many of his people as possible...
It seems like 1930's Germany all over again (from what little I know of it). It's going to be a slow, systemic eroding of our rights, an insidious building up of either hate or apathy, after which he'll be able to do anything he/they want(s). The parallels seem obvious; aggrandizing his party line/disseminating only his "truth" regardless of the facts (propaganda), major financial difficulties & terrible monetary/economic policy (and by extension, wealth inequality and oligarchy), terrorist activity in the years preceding, the gross invasion of privacy, the ability to detain citizens without due process (in the name of fighting terror), the obvious "nationalist" stance he's taking ("America 1st!, closing borders), the marginalizing/dehumanizing/scapegoating of (a) particular people(s) as undesireables (muslims, mexicans, immigrants in general), I could go on, but I'll stop there; I think you get my point.
It's sickening, and I feel dirty by association as an American. The only hope I can hold on to at the moment is that we survive this term as a country, but that things get so bad during it, that in the next election (and the mid-term elections) there is an overwhelming landslide of support for the beliefs and policies and attitudes of people like the Sanders supporters (of which, I am one), so that we never end up in a situation like this again.
