We had a major "snafu" at work in December, regarding a coding error in pay. We were paid for both the vacation hours & holiday pay from our shutdown, and our standard 80hrs biweekly pay. This resulted in the company having to reverse our pay and issuing live checks instead. Unfortunately for some of us, they didn't reverse all of the pay correctly. In my case, they reversed my net payment which goes into my saving account, but I have a standard amount designated to checking that they didn't notice. They also made a deposit into my HSA account that didn't get reversed. Both the HSA payment and the 80hrs pay will be "reimbursed" to the company this next paycheck, which I understand.
Thing is, in researching all this, the payroll lady noticed that I've been paying both pre- and post-tax health insurance premiums. The post-tax premiums date back to my severance package when I was let go in 2009. I was rehired late January of 2011, and should have only been paying pre-tax premiums since then, but they didn't make that change, and I failed to notice it. (Truthfully, I did notice, but assumed there was a reason for doing it that way, not that it was a mistake.) It turns out, I've been paying them $376 extra a year for the last four years. I know that doesn't sound like much, but the idea that I've given this company an extra $1500 of free money really pisses me off. They're going to reimburse me for this past year, but the previous years aren't recoverable, per company policy, because it's my "responsibility to bring mistakes to the attention of payroll".
Sometimes I think this company (specifically a particular HR lady [not the payroll gal]) is out to fuck with me. Everything is a fight with her, whenever I have an issue, or whenever I bring up something that benefits me & not the company. Oh well, price of having a job, I guess...
Part of me is pissed off that they cheated me out of that money, but another part of me is a little embarrassed to admit that it's not really that big of a deal. It's less than the cost of two drinks out per week, with tip. I used to spend much more than that, so really what do I have to bitch about? I guess it's the principle of the thing - if they were an honorable company, they would pay me what they owe me, regardless of whether it's been too long or not. It's not like they don't have some kind of discretionary fund somewhere on the books.
Fuckers.
