150 miles on the cycle yesterday, and I felt like I could have stayed out for a while longer. I think using the lifting belt has been helping my back, as I didn't really have any issues on the ride last night. I'd headed out on a route that I've taken many times, and when I was done with that, I started wandering. Saw a sign for a little town where a childhood acquaintance had grown up, and since I'd never been there, I decided to check it out. Man, what a small town! Literally a four-corner downtown; a convenience store, a restaurant, post office, and a "city hall" of sorts. I sat on the curb for a few minutes, listening to small-town silence & drinking a pop, then took off again. Passed a sign for another small town that I'd heard of before & also had never been to, so I turned to go. Same small town vibe, but I didn't stop this time. I was actually fairly lost by then, and just started picking roads randomly. (Fortunately, from where I was, I knew if I headed either due west or north, I would run into one of the two main interstates we have in our area, so I wasn't worried at all; more curious about where I'd end up!) Turns out, I was a lot closer to home than I expected, and once I found a familiar road, I headed home.
I'd planned to head out to the lakeshore & watch the sunset that night too, but by the time I finished dinner it was too late and I would have missed it. Besides, I'd been on the bike for about 3.5-4 hrs already that day, and although I would have liked to go, I didn't feel a need to ride another 45 minutes out there, just to ride another 45 minutes back in chilly temps (it gets cold in the country when it gets late!). So, for the 2nd night in a row, I stayed in and listened to some old vinyl while reading a book. I've got to rethink my audio setup though - I've got my record player on top of my receiver, and after about 30 minutes or so, the record player gets so hot that it starts to slow down. Seriously, it gets so bad that I can't listen to anything I know by heart, because it sounds so fucked up and slow! I think i can put my cd changer in between my receiver & record player to start, and see if that cools things down a bit. if not, i might have to buy a little fan to keep things cool.
I think the house next door finally sold. There's no real estate sign in the yard anymore, just a political one stating who they're voting for, for congress. I don't consider this a positive sign. Not because I don't care for their candidate, but because they haven't even moved in yet & are already being political. They're the only house on the entire street who has placed a sign of this nature in their yard, the entire time I've lived here. I really hope they end up being cool. Speaking of uncool neighbors, the dog next door is starting to fucking annoy me. I can't even go out in my yard for a minute without that dog constantly barking at me. Constantly. I mean, non-stop; maybe 2 seconds between barks to take a breath, but god damnit! It's a good thing I like being in my house, because I'd be constantly pissed off if I wanted to spend any time outdoors. It's gotten so bad that I'm seriously considering calling the cops. I mean, even when the dog is inside, if i walk out to my car, or even come home from work, he's in the window barking up a fucking storm. It's ridiculous. They do try to get him to stop, but not before he's been on for a half hour or so.
Ok, nevermind that anymore, dogs will be dogs, right? *rollseyes* Anyway, I think I'm going to have a buys month. KT has invited me to her annual Luau (pool party). I've been once before a long time ago, but don't remember much of it. I'm sure there will be an overabundance of drinking, because I guess that's what everyone does to have fun? Should be interesting to watch, but I'm not going to be drinking for another few weeks, so I'm not sure how much I'll be able to take. Still, I rarely get invited anywhere, so I need to go. Also, the weekend of the 22nd, I'm supposed to go to the east side of the state for the old discussion board get-together. Again, it's a drinking crowd, and I'm not sure how it will go (especially if the few people who hate me show up!?). Also, I talked to an old biker bud of mine, with whom I went to the Sturg1s Bike rally back in '02. Really good guy, a bit older than me, also drinks a lot. Kind of became a father-figure of sorts to me back then though, as I was going through some serious depression issues after my divorce. We haven't talked in a couplefew years, but took up again like it was yesterday. (That's one of the things I dig about my closer friends - doesn't matter how long it's been, we just pick right back up.) He told me he wants to get the old group together & go back to the rally next year, as a sort of reunion. I told him I wouldn't go back if we were in town for the official week, but he's planning on maybe the week or two before it, and staying in a town just outside of Sturg1s, which would make thing easier. I told him I might be open to that, but would have to see when it got closer. In the meantime, we talked about my possibly riding out to see him around Lab0r Day. It's about 600 miles one way, but if I take a vacation day to make a four day weekend, it should be a reasonable trip. 9 hours by car means maybe 11 hours on a cycle, due to all the fuel stops/leg stretching. Maybe I'll start off the night before & find a hotel somewhere along the way?
Hell, by then, I might be all bummin' again & decide not to go.
