Outdated Cast of Characters & Venues List (updated 11/1/19)
(These names are really no longer active "players" in this ridiculous drama, so I've removed them from the "current" list...)
(apologies for the number substitutions in some of the names - trying to avoid being found in searches, as most of these local bands are pretty well known around here and are online! If you want to search the bands, change the numbers to letters!)
Huey: older cat, looks a lot like Huey Lewis, plays guitar/sings in a local covers band, does a lot of solo shows in town. Really cool guy, fun to see live. Always comes to talk with me whenever I make one of his shows. Don't see him much anymore.
Grizzly Adams (Adams for short): Younger guy, Strong Man competitor, lets me & other friends come out & train with him on the weekends. Really good guy, married, kid.
the Train Man: Local singer/songwriter friend, great guitar player.
CC: ex-g/f, Tall, blonde, beautiful, brilliant, PhD. Now lives out of state. We talk for a while, then lose contact (well, ok, she stops replying. Not sure why I try sometimes...).
KW: Young girl I met at a friend's party. Attitude, looks, issues remind me of Viv a bit. Very attractive, very troubled. Intense physical attraction between us, but incompatible long-term goals. Tried to commit suicide twice while we were dating. Sexually assaulted me. We no longer talk..
SSG: Sandwich-shop-girl. Young gal I was flirting with for a few months. Tried to convert it to dating, didn't work out. See her all the time, but now we never talk, just smile & say hi.
KJ: new/old crush, friend of Bo's short, sweet, adorable. Hope to be writing more about her in the future.
The Joker: name taken from the St4ve M1ller song, cuz she's a major pothead.
Blue-eyes: cute local girl I've rarely had a chance to talk with. Now dating a friend of mine, long-term. Wish I would have asked her out first.
JP: drummer/lead singer for the band I used to play in, the "P0w3ll Tri0". Brother of JRP. Parents were classically trained musicians and it shows.
JRP: lead guitarist/backup singer for the "P0w3ll Tri0". Brother of JP: Parents were classically trained musicians and it shows.
Animal: drummer/lead singer for "T3rr0r T3rr0r 0h My!" (one of my favorite local bands) - watching him play drums reminds me of Animal from the mupp3ts! Husband of Steph.
Steph: bass/keyboard/backup singer for "T3rr0r T3rr0r 0h My!" wife of Animal
JC: lead guitarist/backup singer for the "H3X B0mbs" (my fave local punk band) really good guy, and an amazing guitarist! just moved out of town.
MM: front man for the "H3X B0mbs". really cool guy
NG: lead/rythm guitarist/ vocals for the" H3X B0mbs". wife got a new job, leaving the band.
DA: bass player/background vocals for the "H3X B0mbs".
Br0ther Ron: All around talent! former drummer for the "H3X B0mbs", Lead singer for the "R3al F4ntast1cs" (local Motown covers band), formerly drummer & lead singer for now defunct band "Br0ther B1ll".
Br0ther Jeff: bass player for "Br4nd3n M4nn & the R3pr1m4nd", the "R3al F4ntast1cs", and formerly of Br0ther B1ll (maybe a couple others!?). Plays stand-up bass, acoustic, and electric, and is also a luthier. Very talented guy.
B_Man: singer/song writer. founded "Br4nd3n M4nn & the R3pr1m4nd", does solo gigs, and puts on a local open mic night
Diken: (rhymes with "liken") named such because he reminds me so much of the drummer for the "Sm1ther33ns", both in looks, and playing style. Drummer/backup singer for "Br4nd3n M4nn & the R3pr1m4nd", sometimes for Meg_D, and about 5-6 other local bands, including my favorite band name "L0vey How3ll". The guy is always working! Cool cat, laid-back, quiet, unassuming. Seems like he'd be a cool friend.
The Singer: another crush, local band lead singer, really cute, very cool, great singer, really young
Ginger: younger gal (red-head) from Canada who was part of the group I camped with this a few summers ago. Really dug my cycle, kinda crushed on me. Recently single, wants me to come visit her in CA. Has a kid. No idea if I'll visit...
Meg_D: singer/song writer. founded a now defunct band called "D00ley N0ted", now does a lot of solo gigs in town. Just assembled a new band called "M0xi3vill3". Beautiful singing voice, great guitar player, and from the limited interaction I've had with her, a real sweetheart.
Crackers: Meg_D's fiance, bass player, good egg. If you think about it, I'm pretty sure you can figure out his 1st name!
The Mixer: Well-studied bartender/mixologist. Designs her own craft cocktails, using her own fresh ingredients. Has now crafted her own Gin too! Sadly, she seems to have written me off due to the fact that when she was going through a breakup, I told her I couldn't commit to taking her out on the cycle once a week. I haven't seen or heard from her since.
Venues
Lou's: L0u1e's, *the* oldest bar in town, right on the edge of the "bad side of town". Major host to live local music.
The D0g: 0ld D0g T4vern - previously home to a well-known microbrewery. Live bands, open mic nights; they get some big acts in, along with a bunch of locals.
Shakes: College bar downtown. Karaoke two nights a week, good cheap drink specials; a place I used to frequent. I know the karaoke dj (Jay) pretty well, as I've been going to his gigs here and at several other locations for years.
The Pub: any of three chain pub locations, my typical hangout for weekend lunches, or if I need a "safe" mellow place to have a couple drinks - great place to start/end a night. Very friendly bar staff.
Chevy's: Place called Fl3tch3rs, on the other side of town. One of the "Pub" family of restaurants. I called it Chevy's because, well, Chevy Chase played that character in a movie called "Fl3tch", so why not?
Un10n: upscale dining, really nice bar, college nights, and much less "gritty" live shows. Jazz, softer rock, etc. Meg_D plays here often, which is the only reason I ever go!
Wallbanger's: H4rv3ys, alternative college, eclectic group but mostly < 30 crowd, cheap drink specials, live bands upstairs 2-4 nights a week. B_Man, Meg_D, "R3al F4ntast1cs" play here often, among others. I only go for the shows.
Pete's: P4P4 P3t3's, downtown, bar is in the back of the restaurant, with a side door. one of the larger live&local show venues. decent stage, decent drinks, sometimes questionable sound system. Caters to heavy rock sounds, and has a couple of dubstep nights. Salsa dancing in the front restaurant on the weekend.
Bruisers: Br3wst3rs Pub, right up the road from my new digs almost identical to the Pub, but with way too few cute girls. More a bar of convenience than anything.
Rup3rt's: New local brewery, now out of business.
Bigs: B1g D3al's, sports bar across town. Out of business now.
Peacock: Now closed - The $trutt, combination coffee shop, bar, live venue. Great place for unique out of town shows/bands, or to just sit & study, etc. Has a jazz brunch on Sundays, I think? I've had several friends play this place too.
Pop's: Now closed - P4ppy's Pl4c3, local mexican restaurant with a bar, pool tables, and an dj 2-3 nights a week. Used to be a great hangout, but now it's just tired, same people been going there for years. Only reason I go anymore is to see if I run into anyone I haven't talked to in ages.
